A beginner’s guide and best practices for using crowdsourcing platforms for survey research: The Case of Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk)

Abstract: Introduction Researchers around the globe are utilizing crowdsourcing tools to reach respondents for quantitative and qualitative research (Chambers & Nimon, 2019). Many social science and business journals are receiving studies that utilize crowdsourcing tools such as Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), Qualtrics, MicroWorkers, ShortTask, ClickWorker, and Crowdsource (e.g., Ahn, & Back, 2019; Ali et al., 2021; Esfahani, & Ozturk, 2019; Jeong, & Lee, 2017; Zhang et al… Show more

“…This investigation used a quantitative approach with the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform, which provides technological support to verify the reliability and consistency of the conclusions (Cobanoglu et al , 2021a). This research design was conducted in two phases in which the data were collected, analyzed and validated accordingly.…”

“…To qualify for the survey, participants needed to have an active SM account and to have traveled within the 18 months prior to the survey. AMT has been used extensively in social science research in marketing research and hospitality and tourism research (Kees et al, 2017;Kock et al, 2020;Neto, 2020;Guttentag and Smith, 2020;Hou et al, 2021;Cobanoglu et al, 2021;Le and Hancer, 2021). To check that the participants were US-based, an internet protocol (IP) address analysis was performed; if the respondent did not reply to the survey from a US-based IP, the response was deleted.…”

“…To check that the participants were US-based, an internet protocol (IP) address analysis was performed; if the respondent did not reply to the survey from a US-based IP, the response was deleted. In addition, several attention-check questions were used to check the reliability of the responses (Cobanoglu et al, 2021;Ali et al, 2018). Any respondents who failed the attentioncheck questions were excluded.…”

“…The use of mTurk is common in hospitality and tourism technology research (Ali et al 2021(Ali et al , 2018Birinci et al 2018;Esfahani and Ozturk 2019;Nanu et al 2020;Neto et al 2020). Researchers should use several techniques to ensure that the responses from MTurk are valid (Cobanoglu et al 2021). These include asking the same question in the survey twice and comparing the results (i. e. asking the age of the respondent in the beginning of the survey and the date of birth at the end of the survey) and removing the ones that do not match.…”
