A bandwidth-enhanced low-profile antenna for in-machine wireless harness communications and its clearance distance evaluation

Abstract: This paper develops a bandwidth-enhanced lowprofile antenna suitable for a new emerging in-machine wireless communication used in a metal-rich confined volume. In the developed antenna, the combination of a slotted ground plane and a feeding patch realizes dual resonances for bandwidth enhancement. It also provides the stability of the reflection characteristic when the antenna is placed very close to metallic obstacles, without using any additional matching networks. The reduction of clearance distance, which… Show more

“…In particular, antenna characteristics are extremely significant for wireless communication in spaces enclosed by metal objects. These characteristics are significantly affected by proximate objects (particularly metals); therefore, antennas that are robust to metals are essential for wireless communication in spaces enclosed by metal objects [4].…”

“…Of particular note, antenna characteristics are a significant issue in closed space wireless communication. It is known that the antenna characteristics are strongly influenced by proximate objects (especially metal), so near-metal-insensitive antennas are essential for closed space wireless communications [4]. This problem was targeted in a previous study that examined multiple antennas and switched among the antenna elements in an effort to increase robustness against proximate objects [5].…”
