A Bamboo Treatment Procedure: Effects on the Durability and Mechanical Performance

Abstract: Bamboo is a natural material having a fast reproduction and high mechanical strengths. However, when a bio-based material in general, and bamboo in particular are expected to be a construction material, their sensitivity to moisture and their durability are usually questionable. Indeed, it is well known that these materials do not possess the same performance in the long-term, when compared to industrial materials. Sustainable solutions for the bamboo treatment still need to be investigated. The present study … Show more

“…The results showed that the treatment decreased the mechanical properties (bending, compressive, and shear strengths). When the treatment duration increases, the mechanical strengths could decrease by 15-58% from the initial strength, depending on each treatment procedure and each mechanical property [35]. On the other hand, some treatments lead to color changes [36,37], which is an undesirable effect [35].…”

“…Para as três partes do bambu base, meio e topo, as médias ficaram abaixo de 15 % de umidade. O processo de tratamento térmico bio-óleo reduz significantemente a umidade do bambu (LI et al, 2015;BUI;GRILLET;TRAN, 2017). Esse tipo de tratamento não evita que brocas ou cupins perfurem o bambu, no entanto eles não conseguem sobreviver no mesmo, evitando uma grande destruição do material (GHAVAMI; MARINHO, 2001).…”

“…This study has shown that bamboo which was at least as stronger as other conventional materials was affordable and sustainable material and it can easily replace them where applicable. However, it is very important that bamboo is well treated in order to ensure its durability and mechanical performance (Bui Q-B, 2017), and service life of related structures.…”
