A Bad Year? Climate Variability and the Wine Industry in Chile

Abstract: Short-term climate conditions may affect crop yields and vintage quality and, as a consequence, wine prices and vineyards’ earnings. In this paper, we use a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Chile, which incorporates very detailed information about the value chain of the wine sector in the country. Using information for the 2015-2016 harvest, we calibrate climate variability shocks associated with a “bad year” for the wine industry in Chile, when premature rains occurred in important wine regions,… Show more

“…Given that this study could be extended to other agricultural contexts, our analysis could have similar policy implications for insurance when estimating losses in the quantity and value of the wine produced after a specific hail shock at a specific time. Haddad et al (2020) used a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Chile to estimate the effects of short-term climatic conditions on vineyard earnings. They found a significant reduction in Chilean real GDP of about 0.067%.…”

“…The general goal of this contribution is to examine case studies as sources of knowledge to be used in designing legal solutions for adaptation against AECCTB. In order to achieve this goal, specific sub-goals have been established like a definition of "case studies" as being source for criteria on the adaptation against AECCTB, based on three different sources that face problems pertaining to AECCTB, and the use of these criterias for gathering data, creating knowledge for effective juridical solutions, standards to accomplish international obligations from adaptation as stated in the PA and UNFCCC into the Chilean legal system, saving biodiversity from AECCTB, small wine producers is one of the cases (Hafgaard, 2016, Hannah, 2013, Giraldo, 2017, Haddad, E. (2019). My approach is qualitative, based on previously gathered data and publications by grounded theory research and phenomenological research.…”

“…For example, in Chile, a climate emergency was declared in 2021 due to the intense drought suffered in the last decade (Aparicio, 2021). This has meant significant challenges for its viticulture sector, especially for the large-scale and export-oriented subsector (Crowley, 2000;Hadarits et al, 2010;Mills-Novoa et al, 2016;Haddad et al, 2020). Climate change poses a major threat to grapevine cultivation (Coombe, 1987;Moutinho-Pereira et al, 2004;Greer et al, 2010Greer et al, , 2013Fraga et al, 2020;Jones et al, 2022) and this may have mayor economic repercussions worldwide (FAO/OIV, 2021).…”
