Anemia during adolescence has a negative effect on growth, cognitive abilities, performance abilities and has a serious impact throughout the reproductive years. The study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. This type of research method is a cross-sectional study. The sample in this study were female students of class XI and XII at SMAS PGRI 2 Banjarmasin who met the inclusion criteria totaling 75 people. Sampling technique with Total Sampling. The research instrument used measurements and questionnaires consisting of Body Mass Index (BMI), Middle-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), menstrual patterns and eating patterns. Data analysis using a computer program. The results showed that the female adolescents in SMAS PGRI 2 Banjarmasin who did not experience anemia were (70.7%) while the female adolescents who had anemia were (29.3%). There is a relationship between BMI and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls p-value 0.023 (<0.05), there is a relationship between MUAC and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls p-value 0.012 (<0.05), there is a relationship between diet and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls p-value 0.021 (<0.05), there is a relationship between menstrual patterns with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls p-value 0.026 (<0.05). Preventive and promotive efforts need to be done by increasing the consumption of nutritious food and giving blood-supplementing tablets especially for female students.

Introduction The triple burden of malnutrition characterised by stunting and wasting, overweight/obesity, and anaemia experienced by Malaysians causes severe and long-lasting damage during the period of development and rapid growth, particularly in adolescence. This study aimed to demonstrate the trend of anaemia prevalence and to determine its longitudinal association with nutritional status and lifestyle among Malaysian adolescents. Method The study involved secondary data analysis from the Malaysian Health and Adolescents Longitudinal Research Team (MyHeART) study. A closed cohort secondary data analysis was performed from the dynamic cohort of 528 adolescents (male = 151; female = 377) aged 13 years attending secondary school who were followed up at 15 and 17 years. Anaemia status was determined by haemoglobin level < 12g/dL based on FBC, and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) was determined when the Mentzer Index < 13. A generalised estimating equation (GEE) was constructed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between nutritional status and lifestyle on anaemia status over five years. Results The trend of anaemia prevalence increased significantly across the age group (7•9%; 95% CI: 2•3-11•1, 13•9%; 95% CI: 10•8-15•7 and 15•8%; 95% CI: 3•8-23•1) at 13, 15 and 17 years, respectively, especially among females. The trend of anaemia prevalence among females, also increased significantly across the age group (11.1%;95% CI:6.7-17.8, 15.7%;95% CI:11.4-21.3, 23.1%;95% CI:16.8-31.0). A similar trend was noted for the prevalence of IDA among those who were anaemic (66•5%; 95% CI: 40•4-85•3, 72•2%;95% CI: 54•8-85•4, 76•3%; 95% CI: 59•2-87•7). A longitudinal analysis using GEE revealed that adolescents who did not meet the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for total iron intake per day were significantly associated with anaemia (RR=1•517;95% CI: 1•012-2•275; p=0•044) and IDA (RR=1•776;95% CI: 1•225-2•57; p= 0•002). Conclusion The overall trend of anaemia among adolescents is in increasing trend and anaemia is prevalent among female adolescents in this study. It is crucial to understand that the current fortification strategy may need to be revisited, and robust intervention programmes are necessary and should be sex specific.

Adolescent period is marked by bone modeling and remodeling and leads to accrual of peak bone mass. Ideal peak bone mass depends on diet, hormones, genetic influence and environment and has consequences on bone health in adulthood. We measured biochemical indicators of bone health in rural adolescent girls. Methods: Five hundred fifty adolescent girls from longitudinal DERVAN cohort study from Indian state of Maharashtra underwent anthropometry. Biochemical parameters (intact parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase) were measured. Results: Prevalence of underweight & stunting was 28.8%, 30.7% respectively. More than 56% were thin & only 5% were obese. Median body fat% & bone mass measured by bio-impedance were 23.3 and 1.6 Kg respectively. More than 80% were vitamin D deficient and 12.0% were calcium deficient. Median dietary calcium intake was 158.5mg/day which was far below recommended 850 mg/day. Median parathyroid hormone concentration was 8.49pmol/L and 66.7% had elevated concentrations (> 6.89pmol/L). Elevated phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase were observed in 23.3% and 23.0%. Parathyroid hormone was inversely associated with age (p<0.001) and vitamin D (p<0.001) and directly with phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase (p<0.05) for both. On multivariate analysis elevated parathyroid hormone was associated with low vitamin D (p<0.001). Conclusion: The adolescent girls of KONKAN are undernourished and vitamin D deficient. Despite poor dietary calcium intake the serum calcium levels were maintained at the cost of elevated parathyroid hormone. Thus parathyroid hormone may be used as a marker of bone health. This could be useful in planning early interventions to improve bone health.
