A 5‑year evaluation of chemoprophylactic treatment in elementary school children with subclinical leprosy

Abstract: Subclinical leprosy is an infectious disease in which the immune system remains infected with Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae). The progress of subclinical leprosy to clinical cases within 1 year of infection is 1.5%, with an increase to 6% in the following 4 years. Rifampicin is frequently used for prevention of leprosy, and clarithromycin has a bactericidal effect on M. leprae. Thus, the combination of both is expected to improve disease control in patients with subclinical leprosy. The aim of the present st… Show more

“…Early detection of M. leprae is important in preventing further disability and breaking the transmission chain, especially in cases of subclinical leprosy which often go undetected. 3,[5][6][7] Phenolic Glycolipid (PGL-1) is the dominant component of carbohydrates and lipids in M. leprae. This antigen is found in all tissues infected with M. leprae and can survive until the tissue dies.…”

“…Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) in Indonesia has existed since 1980. 3,4 Healthy individuals have a natural immune system capable of fighting M. leprae infection, and only 15% of individuals with a weak immune system may become infected with M. leprae. 1 This is considered as subclinical leprosy in individuals who look healthy without any clinical signs and symptoms of leprosy but have high levels of specific antibodies against leprosy bacilli.…”
