A 400-year reconstruction of July relative air humidity for the Vienna region (eastern Austria) based on carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios in tree-ring latewood cellulose of oaks (Quercus petraea Matt. Liebl.)

Abstract: Stable isotope chronologies of carbon and oxygen for the period from 1600 to 2003 and of non-exchangeable hydrogen for the last century were constructed base upon tree-ring latewood cellulose from oaks (Quercus petraea Matt. Liebl.) grown in the Vienna region (Austria). The stable isotope ratios reflect highly significantly the summer climate conditions. For the reconstruction of temperature and relative air humidity, verifiable bivariate linear regression models were calculated. Hydrogen isotope values clearl… Show more

The validity of the local drought reconstructions from Fontainebleau and Angoulême is supported by the high correlations between the drought index and δ 18 O c , as well as by the verification of the models with independent data.…”

“…However, the response is usually strictly constrained to the meteorological summer. Although, for instance, significantly wider response window, including previous winter and autumn seasons, was recently reported for oaks from the Vienna Basin (Haupt et al, 2011). The unusually wide optimal response window of the pedunculate oak latewood δ 13 C of Bakta Forest is probably an interference of site-and species-specific ecological effects.…”

“…The rich biotic/abiotic information recorded by δ 18 Ocell renders δ 18 Ocell, a powerful tool for both paleoclimate and ecophysiological studies. For example, δ 18 Ocell has been shown to be a good proxy to a number of climatic/ physiological factors/events including air temperature (Daux et al 2011), tree canopy temperature (Helliker & Richter 2008;Song et al 2011), precipitation (Brienen et al 2012), relative humidity (RH; Haupt et al 2011) and hurricane activities (Miller et al 2006).…”
