“…This idea has support from the fact that the mean BMI values were slightly higher for cases (28.4) and for controls (28.4) in the prior US study relative to the study presented here, and this was despite the younger mean ages of the prior study. Although no associations were observed in the present study when stratified by BMI or waist circumference, waist-tohip ratio is the highest anthropometric correlate of visceral adipose tissue/subcutaneous adipose tissue ratio in men (Bazzocchi et al 2014) and both of these fat depots have been implicated in risk of Barrett's esophagus, with waist circumference positively associated (Kubo et al 2013) and hip circumference inversely associated (Kendall et al 2016). Similar effects have been noted for esophageal adenocarcinoma (Steffen et al 2015).…”

“…This is particularly true for the Endocrine newer DXA devices, as the one we used. Such a machine provides enhanced resolution, improved image quality, and better algorithms for body composition assessment compared to the earlier densitometers, thus allowing a very accurate estimation of fat distribution, muscle (sarcopenia), and bone mass [6,[15][16][17]. However, as DXA devices are expensive and not available in all settings, their use in daily practice is limited.…”

“…The MT of the forearm flexors (i.e., biceps brachii and brachialis) was accepted as the distance (cm) from the adipose tissue-muscle interface to the muscle-bone interface (Radaelli et al 2013). The FT was accepted as the distance (cm) from the surface of the skin to the adipose tissue-muscle interface (Bazzocchi et al 2014). Both MT and FT were determined using the straight-line function in the ImageJ software (Fig.…”
