A 3-year experience with laparoscopic gastric banding for obesity

Abstract: Laparoscopic gastric banding is followed by a weight reduction that is similar to that observed after vertical banded gastroplasty, with a much lower postoperative morbidity, a shorter hospital stay, and an earlier resumption of normal activities. If these results can be confirmed by long-term follow-up, laparoscopic gastric banding will be confirmed as the restrictive procedure of choice for morbid obesity.

“…6,12,13 Studies from other centres have reported greater %EWL than the present study. Suter and colleagues 14 reported an EWL of 55% at 1-year follow-up; however, patients in that study were younger women, a group in which we have also observed better weight loss outcomes. Gravante and colleagues 15 reported a %EWL of 48.2% after 1 year in a study comparing 2 different devices, with no difference in weight loss between the groups.…”

“…In contrast, ‘anterior slippage’ may still occur following suprabursal band placement, but this will only happen in patients in whom the seromuscular stitches have burst. According to the findings in the literature and based on our own experience we can state that both types of band dislocation may occur with the LAP-BAND and with the Swedish Band as well where the incidence of each type of slippage only depends on the surgical technique used for band implantation [8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16]. …”
