A 3-year evaluation of preclinicaltrials.eu reveals room for improvement in preregistration of animal studies

Abstract: In 2018, the first registry dedicated to preregistration of animal study protocols was launched. Despite international support, the overall number of (pre)registered protocols is still low, illustrating the need for pushing the preregistration agenda among researchers and policymakers.

“…Preregistration has been a commonly used practice in research for some time in several different research disciplines, such as psychology ( Nosek et al, 2018 ), biomedical research ( Serghiou et al, 2023 ), applied research ( Evans et al, 2023 ), and animal research ( van der Naald et al, 2021 ), among others. A registry specifically designed for collation of HBM studies performed worldwide prior to data being collected/accessed (i.e., preregistration of HBM studies) is currently lacking.…”

“…To promote preregistration among researchers, we will provide webinars and aim to develop e-learning tools. We also create promotional material and publish relevant information online, in collaborators’ newsletters or via short communications 1. Institutions, animal ethics committees and animal welfare bodies will be approached to aid in promoting preregistration and reward good behaviour.…”

“…Some open preregistration platforms also provide a digital object identifier (DOI), which makes the registered study citable. Three public registries actively encourage the preregistration of animal studies conducted around the world: OSF registry, preclinicaltrials.eu, and animalstudyregistry.org [41][42][43][44][45]. Scientists can choose the registry according to their needs.…”
