A 3 GHz silicon-BJT active resonator and filter

Abstract: A tunable active resonator for filtering applications is presented in this paper. The resonator consists of a fully differential high-Q active inductor with resonating passive capacitors. The realisation of the active inductor has no critical passive components, which reduces size and sensitivity, and extends the number of possible process technologies. On the other hand, the inherently poor noise properties of active inductors are discussed. The tuning range of the resonator is 2.5 -3 GHz with freely adjustabl… Show more

“…In fact for our circuit simulation (bias point and band), as will be seen: R bi2 =110Ω and 1/(ωC π2 )=136Ω at 30GHz (Cπ=39fF, R B1 =10Ω, r bi2 =100Ω). So we have more elaborate expressions for R, L and C, and they are frequency dependent ( ) β ω π π π 1 2 2 2 2 2 1 1 (10) where ߚ is given by:…”

“…This is a widely used method, but not always so realized by designers. For example, many papers attribute the higher Q R of the cascode-active inductor solely to the R out enhancement of the cascode FET [57], and some researchers believe that the phase lag decreases Q and hence is undesirable [59]. The following discussion will show that the opposite is true.…”

“…The active inductor studied in this paper is based on a simple gyrator topology consisting of a feedback cascode with two HBTs [2,5,6]. In figure 1 is presented the circuit schematics of the proposed active inductor, based on the simple gyrator.…”
