A 3-D millimeterwave luggage scanner

Abstract: A light weight, transportable measurement system for the inspection of suspicious luggage in a threat situation has been developed, based upon miniaturized millimetre wave radar modules operating at W-band. To allow for a sufficient detection capability of objects hidden within a piece of ownerless luggage within a passenger terminal at a sufficiently short scanning time, a radar approach rather than a passive radiometer technique was chosen. It is generally recognized, that only synthetic aperture is able to … Show more

“…The monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) of the 94 GHz radar (shown in Fig. 4 and 5) module includes a varactor tuned VCO with injection port, very compact transmit and receive amplifiers and a single-ended resistive mixer [1][2][3][4]. The VCO approach in comparison with an upconverter approach has the advantage of much lower spurious frequencies.…”

“…Centimeter and millimetre waves are often used for nondestructive material inspection [6][7] or security applications [3] as they are able to penetrate most of dielectric materials. To demonstrate it without using laboratory equipment, a luggage scanner has been set up.…”

“…Other objects of interest are abbandoned baggages, where one wants to know whether the baggage contains explosives [5]- [8]. The imaging modalities in these cases are nearly the same as in the present paper.…”
