A 2D Sketch-Based User Interface for 3D CAD Model Retrieval

Abstract: Sketching continues to be a vital part of methods and technologies related to Concept Development, including those analyzed in this paper: "concept design with constraints", "solid from sketch", "sketching on a point cloud" and "geometric modeling of design constraints". Existing methods are analyzed and critical subproblems are identified. New solution methods are proposed for the subjects "solid from sketch" and "sketching on a point cloud".

“…Although more and more researchers reported the application of sketch in CAD modeling [12][13][14][15][16][17], these reports focused on the feature recognition by using primitive recognition techniques. The main methods in these reports can be classified into two categories, namely, gesture-based recognition and geometric-based recognition.…”

“…Consider (2) Fitting Error Detection. By employing least median squares method [15] to fit the polygon vertices of a stroke to a conic curve in (5), we can get a series of constructed functions of fitting error detection. The mean absolute error is calculated as follow:…”

“…This descriptor is invariant to rotation and is represented with a set of the amplitudes of constituent trigonometrics (Funkhouser et al, 2003). Pu et al proposed 2D sketch-based user interface for 3D CAD model retrieval, where 2D shapes are compared with each other by matching a large amount of sample points on their edges and calculating the Euclidean distance distribution between the sample points (Pu et al, 2005). In all cases, most of the techniques for analyzing shapes of figures have been used mainly for matching and data retrieval.…”

“…also made a good survey of sketch-based 3D shape retrieval algorithms and provided a comprehensive comparison for some state-of-the-art approaches. For domain-specific 3D CAD model retrieval based on hand-drawn sketch inputs, Pu et al(2005) obtained 2D views by projecting 3D CAD model into the planes of a bounding box and used 2D shape distribution method to compute the similarity between 2D views and input sketches. Hou and Ramani(2007) combined 2.5D spherical harmonic, Fourier descriptors and Zernike moments as shape descriptors to generate multi-classifiers, the probability of the input sketch belonging to each predefined category of 3D CAD model can be estimated by using this classifier.…”
