A 24-Gd nanocapsule with a large magnetocaloric effect

Abstract: Two 24-nuclear lanthanide clusters, and were obtained and structurally characterized. Magnetic investigations reveal that exhibits the largest entropy change (-ΔS(m)) of 46.12 J kg(-1) K(-1) for ΔH = 7 T in all reported molecular clusters, and single-molecule magnet behaviour is observed in .

“…The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) that dictates the capacity of the refrigerants is determined by the isothermal magnetic entropy change (Δ S m ) and the adiabatic temperature change (Δ T ad ) induced by the change of the external field 4. 5 Since the first study of the MCE in the famous molecule {Mn 12 },6 large amount of molecular clusters and coordination polymers were excavated, including {Fe 14 },7 {Mn 10 },8 {Mn 4 Gd 4 },9 {Co x Gd y },10 {Cu 5 Gd 4 },11 {Ni 6 Gd 6 },12 {Gd 2 },13 {Gd 4 Ni 8 },14 {Mn x Gd y },15 {Gd 24 },16 [Gd(OAc) 3 (H 2 O) 0.5 ] n (Ac=acyl),17 [Gd(HCOO)(OAc) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] n ,18 [Gd(HCOO)(C 8 H 4 O 4 )] n ,19 and [Mn(H 2 O) 6 ] n [MnGd(C 4 H 4 O 5 ) 3 ] 2 n ⋅ 6 n H 2 O 20…”

“…4 As a result, a lot of pure lanthanide clusters, such as Ln 3 −Ln 10 , 5 Ln 12 −Ln 15 , 6 Ln 20 , 7 Ln 22 , 8 Ln 24 , 9 Ln 36 , 10 Ln 38 11 Ln 48 , 11,12 Ln 60 , 13 and Ln 104 , 14 have been documented. Recently, Yaghi et al proposed that metal cluster units may self-assemble into coordination polymers, 15 which will bring about the particular characteristics of the clusters into the obtained frameworks.…”

“…The most desirable attribute of these materials is their large ground spin states4 with an associated high Δ S m , which is a key parameter that determines the MCE of a magnetic system. Many of these complexes showing promising MCE properties are usually obtained from solvothermal methods under harsh conditions, such as [Ni 6 Gd 6 P 6 ],4a [Gd 24 ],4e [Co 8 Gd 8 ],4b [Co 6 Gd 8 ],4d etc 2. 4c, 5, or slow evaporation of reaction mixtures over a prolonged period, such as [Ln 42 M 10 ],4h [Mn 4 Ln 4 ],6 [Gd(HCOO)(OAc) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ],7 etc 4f.…”
