A 233 km tunnel for lepton and hadron colliders

Abstract: Abstract. A decade ago, a cost analysis was conducted to bore a 233 km circumference Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC) tunnel passing through Fermilab. Here we outline implementations of e + e − , pp, and μ + μ − collider rings in this tunnel using recent technological innovations. The 240 and 500 GeV e + e − colliders employ Crab Waist Crossings, ultra low emittance damped bunches, short vertical IP focal lengths, superconducting RF, and low coercivity, grain oriented silicon steel/concrete dipoles. Some deta… Show more

“…• The 120 GeV ring receives the 8.94 GeV protons to be accelerated to 120 GeV energy, which are sent to the antiproton source to produce the antiprotons. Lepton colliders might also share the tunnel [39,40,[67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78].…”

“…There it can be seen the gluon fusion (gg) process dominates the lighter Higgs production in pp collisions up to the 1 TeV range. The qq part of the total cross section will be more important at higher masses, scaling with mass of the object M over center of mass collision energy M/ √ s. The cross section to produce high mass objects in pp collisions can be of order 10 times higher than it is for proton-proton collisions[39,40].…”

“…In order to complete the picture, we should mention other collider projects that were considering an application of the CW scheme such as SuperB [11] and SuperTau-Charm [12] factories in Italy, a 500 GeV e+e-collider in a 233-km tunnel [13] in USA, and an upgrade option of the LHC based on collisions of very flat bunches [14,15].…”

“…The observed low mass Higgs boson can be reached also with storage ring e + e − colliders (SRC). Several proposals [3,4,5,6,7,8,9] for a 2E 0 = 240 GeV SRC for the study of the Higgs boson in e + e − → HZ have recently been put forward. Lower cost and reliance on firmly established technologies and higher luminosity are cited as these projects' advantages over an LC.…”
