A 2‐Year Prospective Study of Human Papillomavirus Persistence among Women with a Cytological Diagnosis of Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance or Low‐Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion

Abstract: Although virtually all HPV infections clear within 2 years, the remaining infections have a high potential for persistence and, by implication, progression to precancer and cancer. Once biological and behavioral determinants are controlled for, HPV infections with different types seem to be independent of each other.

“…S1)11, 18, 19 by calibrating the rate of clearance of HPV16 infection. HPV16 clearance rate was found to decrease with time since infection (Supporting Information Table S1), in accordance with empirical evidence 20, 21. The corresponding average duration of HPV16 infection was 11 months.…”

“…Multiple infections are frequent in patients with CIN1 and are found in 50% of these cases (Plummer et al, 2007), while here, we found a greater number of these cases in CIN3 rather than in CIN2. In the present study, the prevalence was single infection with 59.5% of the cases with HPV 16, 31, 52, 53 and 58, and there was statistically significant difference (P = 0.029) when it was compared to multiple infections associated with other HPV types.…”

“…Most of the infections caused by HPV are of benign evolution and 80-90% is temporary, being eliminated spontaneously by the host organism within 10-18 months; persistence is liable to occur in only 20% of cases, leading to the onset of early lesions and cervical cancer (Kjaer et al, 2002;Plummer et al, 2007;Smith et al, 2007;Winer et al, 2011;Panatto et al, 2012).…”
