A 18-pJ/Pulse OOK CMOS Transmitter for Multiband UWB Impulse Radio

Abstract: This letter presents a new transmitter for multiband impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) systems. The ultra low-power, low-complexity UWB transmitter operates over three 528-MHz subbands in 3-5 GHz band. It consists of an On-Off Keying (OOK) modulator and a pulse generator which is based on the ON/OFF switching operation of an oscillator. Measurements show a pulse duration of 3.5 ns and a spectrum that fully complies with the FCC spectral mask with more than 20 dB of sidelobe rejection. Implemented in 0.18-m… Show more

“…Generally, there have been three major methods to generate short pulses which can comply with FCC's spectral mask: carrier-based method [2], [4], [6], using pulse shaping filter [5], using ON/OFF pulsed oscillator [3]. First of all, the carrier-based method is not suitable for simple structure and low power operation.…”

“…For last several years, there have been many reports on Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems such as 3 -10 GHz UWB communication system [1] - [3] and 22 -29 GHz UWB pulse radar system [4] - [7]. Especially, UWB pulse radar system is approved for short range radar (SRR) for automotive, which is defined by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2002 [8].…”

“…Further, it is equally challenging to generate baseband pulses with large bandwidth, and hence the up-converted UWB pulses typically only occupy either the low band or part of the high band. Some clever circuit techniques can be applied to simplify the architecture and reduce the power consumption, e.g., by directly switching on and off an RF oscillator using the modulated baseband data instead of up-conversion using a mixer [12]. Due to the transient time to start and stop the oscillator, however, the generated pulse width is usually quite large (more than 3 ns in [12]), and hence generated UWB pulses can only occupy a small bandwidth (528 MHz in [12]).…”
