A 1500 year record of accumulation at Amundsenisen western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, derived from electrical and radioactive measurements on a 120 m ice core

Abstract: Abstract. During the Nordic EPICA pre-site survey in Dronning Maud Land in 1997/1998 a 120 rn long ice core was retrieved (76ø00'S 08ø03'W, 2400 rn above sea level). The whole core has been measured using the electric conductivity measurement (ECM) and dielectric profiling (DEP) techniques, and the core chronology has been established by detecting major

“…We used Simkin and Siebert's (1994) chronology of eruptions to assign volcanic events that have been dated but not yet identified. This chronology uses theVEI as a measure for the strength of the eruption on a logarithmic scale. We made the identification purely on the strength of the eruption and the latitude of the geographic location of the volcano (Delmas and others,1985;Karlo« f and others, 2000). No geochemical analyses were carried out on these volcanic horizons, and our results should be interpreted with care as the VEI is not a measure of the strength of a DEP peak, which is often dominated by the sulphate load.…”

“…Here, we describe the field conditions only for the M150 and BAS cores, as the field conditions for the other four cores have already been published (Karlo« f and others, 2000;Oerter and others, 2000;Sommer and others, 2000a, b;Traufetter and others, in press). Both cores were drilled with a conventional electromechanical ice-core drill (e.g.…”

“…The authors believed that such 850 E. Y. Osipov et al: High-resolution 900 year volcanic and climatic record spatial differences result from minor shifts in preferred locations for large-scale circulation features. Decreased snow accumulation has been revealed in the ice core from Dronning Maud Land for the period from 1452 to 1641 (Karlöf et al, 2000). Sharply lower accumulation rates at the period AD 1460-1800 were determined at the DT263 site, East Antarctica, by Liya et al (2006).…”
