A 15.5-Year Follow-up Study of Stroke in a Japanese Provincial City

Abstract: Most traditional risk factors, including blood pressure and its related organ diseases, were confirmed, but serum total cholesterol had almost no effect. Physical activity had both negative and positive effects on stroke risk. In these findings, however, some differences related to sex were also observed.

“…Also, in many epidemiological studies reported in the United States and other Western countries, cigarette smoking has been noted to be a major risk factor of CI (Salonen et al 1982;Abbott et al 1986). Some studies of Japanese, including the Nippon data, have also shown smoking to be a risk factor of CI (Nakayama et al 1997;Ueshima et al 2004).…”

“…Using the differential diagnosis of carotid artery calcification described by Friedlander (1995), when there was a radiopaque nodular mass (or masses) independent of the hyoid bone adjacent to the risk factor for CI (Wolf et al 1988;Ueshima et al 2004). Although the sudden onset of CI is not simple and related with many factors (Nakayama et al 1997), the authors hypothesized that smoking may have a large influence on the prevalence of carotid artery calcification seen on panoramic dental radiographs.…”

“…4 Prevalence of risk factors for Japanese are different from those in Western countries, but the relationship of the risk factors to cardiovascular incidence and mortality appears essentially the same as those in Western countries. [5][6][7] However, since the Japanese data are mainly from small cohorts in rural populations, comprehensive analysis of the effect of risk factors on CVD mortality and mortality from all causes has not been reported from large Japanese populations.…”

“…15 Although previous studies had shown proteinuria as an independent predictor of stroke outcome in general population, none have examined the possible association between microalbuminuria and incident of stroke. 16,17 Microalbuminuria is independently associated with carotid artery intima-media thickness in non-DM individual in insulin resistance and atherosclerosis study, USA. 18 The Epic Norfolk study is the 1st report evaluating the prospective relationship between microalbumin and fatal and non-fatal cerebrovascular accidents in general population.…”
