“…Filariasis exists in parts of rural Trinidad (Nathan, 1981) but not in Port-of-Spain. Isolated cases of viral encephalitis occur on the island but mainly in rural areas (Aitken et al, 1969) and malaria has been almost eliminated by eradication schemes aimed at the Anopheles mosquito. A total of 62 cases of viral encephalitis and 487 imported cases of malaria were notified in Trinidad and Tobago between 1962 and 1980 Tobago Central Statistical Office, 1974, and1983).…”

“…This study forms part of an investigation into the epizootiology and ecology of naturally occurring eastern and Venezuelan equine encephalitis (EEE & VEE) viruses in the forests of Trinidad carried out by the Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory. Aitken et al (1969) have shown that between 1953 and 1963 VEE virus in Trinidad was frequently isolated from wild-caught Culex portesi Senevet & Abonnenc and EEE virus was isolated twice from C. nigripalpus Theobald and four times from C. taeniopus Dyar & Knato. In Panama, Srihongse and Galindo (1967) isolated EEE virus from C. taeniopus.…”
