A 10-year monitoring of soil properties dynamics and soil fertility evaluation in Chinese hickory plantation regions of southeastern China

Abstract: Monitoring the temporal and spatial variation of soil properties is helpful to understand the evolution of soil properties and adjust the management method in time. Soil fertility evaluation is an urgent need to understand soil fertility level and prevent soil degradation. Here, we conducted an intensive field investigation in Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) plantation to clarify the spatial and temporal variation of soil properties and its influencing factors, and to evaluate the change of soil fert… Show more

“…As to biochar feedstock types, crop straw biochar had greater effects than woody biochar, which might be because straw has a larger void and more volatile substances (Abel et al, 2013;Intani et al, 2018). Additionally, soil properties could change with tillage management (Jin et al, 2021), and the multifactor interaction might cause a difference in the effect of high-temperature biochar. Other meta-analyses couldn't reach a unified result, either.…”

“…When there are numerous heavy metal pollutants exposed through different pathways, the risks can be added together to calculate the combined carcinogenic risk (CR) and non-carcinogenic health risk (HI). The formula for its calculation and detailed meaning can be found in these researches [36][37][38][39].…”

“…However, to increase production and maximize economic benefits, a large amount of chemical fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide is applied annually. Long-term intensive management has caused soil degradation including soil erosion, soil acidification, nutrient imbalance, and reduction in soil microbial activities and diversity in Chinese hickory forests [4][5][6][7]. These problems can lead to a decline in the quality and yield of Chinese hickory plants [8], thereby causing adverse impacts on economic and ecological benefits.…”
