Fatigue crack growth rate, da/dN, of two high strength steels were examined in a laboratory air at different stress ratios, covering almost the entire range of stress intensity, AK, from nearly threshold value, AKth, to final fracture. The fatigue fracture toughness, AKfc, corresponding to the final fracture in fatigue, was also determined. The lower the AKfc, the higher da/dN and reduced AKth are revealed.This correlation was analyzed quantitatively based on the four parameter Weibull function. And the stress ratio dependency of the fatigue crack propagation curve can be cleared in a successful manner.The fatigue characteristic stress intensities, Ke and Kv, are proposed to define the transition behaviour in fatigue crack growth curve, from so called region 1 to 2, and from region 2 to 3, respectively. Especially the Kv value can be specified to be the 0.63Kfc.

In the present study, the fatigue crack propagation tests of Zr-based metallic glass were conducted in laboratory air, and the fracture surface was observed to clarify the effects of loading frequency and the stress ratio. In spite of being brittle material, the metallic glass showed stable fatigue crack propagation behaviour, and the relationship between the crack propagation rate, da/dN, and the stress intensity range, K, can be divided into three regions as well as conventional crystalline metals. The crack propagation rate can be expressed as a function of the stress intensity range by Paris law in the middle region. The power in Paris law was 1.4, and it is considerably smaller than the value for conventional crystalline metals. The threshold stress intensity range, Kth, was 1.8 MPam1/2. The effects of the stress ratio and the loading frequency were not observed on the relationships, da/dN-K and da/dN-Keff. Then, the fatigue crack propagation of the metallic glass is cycle dependent in laboratory air.

Fatigue tests were carried out on real bearings with various types of artificial defects on their outer‐ring raceways. Finite element analysis (FEM) revealed that the stress intensity factor (SIF) ranges and stress ratios were complex and variable, depending on the gap fittings between the outer rings and housings, as well as on the sizes of the initial defects, both of which influenced the fatigue thresholds of the bearings. In order to establish a comprehensive evaluation of fatigue limits under several combinations of bearing geometries and defect sizes, fatigue crack‐growth thresholds were also measured at different stress ratios by focusing on crack‐closure behaviour. Based on all of the analytical and experimental results, fracture mechanics‐based criteria were proposed for the assessment of fatigue fracture in rolling bearings.
