Abstract: We present an annotated checklist of the benthic marine and brackish algae of the Galician coasts (Spain) based on literature records and new collections. This checklist includes 618 species: 118 Cyanophyta, 296 Rhodophyta, 127 Ochrophyta, and 77 Chlorophyta. The number of specific, infraspecific taxa, and stages is 643: 121 Cyanophyta, 309 Rhodophyta, 135 Ochrophyta, and 79 Chlorophyta. Hyella caespitosa var. nitida, Calothrix fasciculata, Gracilariopsis longissima, Compsonema minutum, and Sphacelaria tribulo… Show more

“…The same trend has occurred in the two remaining kelp species, Laminaria hyperborea (Fig. 2), which is a subtidal species that was very common in the west part of the north coast of Spain in the 1970s and 1980s (McNeill, 1992) but also present east of Pen˜as Cape in the 1990s (my observations), and finally Saccharina latissima, which is a rare kelp on the north coast of Spain (Miranda, 1931;Anado´n & Niell, 1980;Weber-Peukert & Schnetter, 1982;Ba´rbara et al, 2005).…”

“…Species with a southern, warm temperate, distribution were present further south, sometimes until Cape Verde (West Africa). Where no information was given in Lünning (1990), the distribution as determined by Gorostiaga et al (2004), Barbara et al (2005) and Araujo et al (2009) was adopted. Taxa were indicated as cosmopolitan whenever no clear restriction in distribution was found.…”
