“…Such NCD present a large number of grain boundaries that contain substantial graphitic impurities and are often termed as cauliflower or ballas diamond. The cauliflower-like microstructure has been attributed to the secondary nucleation or renucleation process [26,27].…”

“…We recall that the type A electrodes differ from the rest in that no Ti hydrides were found in the substrates as the Ti substrates were not subjected to etching in HCl, while the etched Ti substrates exhibited the presence of TiH and TiH 2 hydrides. It was speculated in [13] that the formation of hydrides in the Ti surface layer by preetching with hydrogen plasma might retard the formation of TiC phase when carbon atoms strike the Ti surface, thus significantly increasing the nuclei density of diamond crystals during deposition. A copious diamond nucleation and growth rate is expected to be beneficial to the cover- Fig.…”

“…1͑b͒ shows a typical brittle fracture mode with numerous hydride needles, indicating fracture along many large and coarse ␣-Ti plates. The impact energy of the pure Ti was reduced from 30 to 5 J upon bombarding by H plasma for 12 h. 17 As C and N are not as diffusive as H, it is hard to identify the existence of TiC and TiN from the cross-section observation. Figure 1͑c͒ was obtained by bombarding with H 2 ϩCH 4 plasma ͑total pressure 30 Torr, H 2 :CH 4 gas flow rate is 4:196 in sccm͒ for 4 h. SEM and energy-dispersive x-ray ͑EDX͒ analysis reveal that diamond particles have formed on the rough TiC layer.…”
