Structural alignment in Fe-0.4C alloy transformed in high magnetic field has been evaluated by quantitative microscopy analysis. An aligned two-phase structure is formed in high magnetic field by austenite to ferrite transformation during slow cooling. Ferrite grains are elongated and connected with each other along the direction of magnetic field. The degree of alignment can be evaluated by measuring the number of intersections between test lines and ferrite/austenite phase boundaries. Results of measurement show that the degree of alignment increases continuously with increasing magnetic field strength up to 10 Tesla.

Effects of magnetic field strength and prior austenite grain size on the microstructure formed by the reverse transformation from lath martensite to austenite have been investigated in Fe-0.4C alloy. The degree of elongation of reverse-transformed austenite increases with increasing applied magnetic field, which is a similar result with that for austenite to ferrite transformation. However, well-elongated austenite is formed not only in small prior austenite grains but also in relatively large prior austenite grains, which is different from the case of austenite to ferrite transformation.

During last decade, the phase-field method has emerged across many fields in materials science as the powerful tool to simulate and predict the complex microstructure developments. In this study, the microstructure changes of g precipitation in polycrystalline a phase during thermomagnetic treatment in Fe-0.4C alloy are modeled using the phase-field method. Using phase-field simulation, the model reasonably represents microstructure changes in Fe-0.4C system quantitatively. In particular, it is shown that the structural elongation and alignment of the (aϩg) two-phase microstructure is influenced by the anisotropic carbon diffusion induced by the magnetic energy at the initial stage of the g phase formation. Modeling of microstructure developments with the framework of the phase-field method is shown to be a very effective strategy to predict and analyze complex microstructure formation.
