Summary Emergent diseases are an increasing problem in forests worldwide. Exotic pathogens are now threatening forests where pathogens have not traditionally been considered to be major ecological drivers of tree demography, such as water‐limited Mediterranean forests. However, how pathogens might limit regeneration in invaded forests is largely unknown. Here we used fungicide to analyse the impact of soil‐borne oomycete pathogens on seedling establishment at community level in Mediterranean forests invaded by the exotic oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi. Fungicide effects were modelled as a function of the tree neighbourhood composition, the seed mass of the target species, and the abiotic environment. Fungicide application had positive effects on seedling performance that varied in magnitude and spatial structure among coexisting species. Seed mass predicted fungicide effects on seedling emergence, but not on survival or growth. Positive fungicide effects were modulated by levels of abiotic resources, mainly water, increasing with soil moisture. Our results support a novel role for soil‐borne oomycete pathogens as one more axis of the regeneration niche of woody species in water‐limited forests. Given the increasing numbers of exotic oomycete pathogens worldwide, more research is needed to understand the role of this relevant microbial group as a factor shaping seedling establishment.

Species–area relationships (SAR) constitute a key aspect of ecological theory and are integral to other scientific disciplines, such as biogeography, which have played a crucial role in advancing biology. The theory of insular biogeography provides a clear example. This theory initially expanded from true islands to other types of systems characterized by their insularity. One such approach was linked to geoedaphic islands, as seen in gypsum outcrops. While these continental areas have been considered insular systems, only limited and mostly indirect evidence thereof has been provided. This study utilized SAR to advance the understanding of gypsum outcrops as insular continental territories. It is hereby hypothesized that gypsum outcrops are edaphic islands, although their insular nature depends on the different functional or ecological plant types, and this nature will be reflected in the potential Arrhenius model z values. The results obtained support both hypotheses and provide insight into the ecological factors that help interpret the insularity of these areas. This interpretation goes beyond their mere extent and the distance among outcrops, emphasizing the importance of environmental filters. Said filters vary in permeability depending on the degree of gypsophily, or preference for gypsum, exhibited by different species.

The mid-domain effect (MDE) is a vital hypothesis to explain altitudinal patterns of species diversity of mountainous plants with different gradients, but it is bounded in terms of its application at the plant level. To verify the MDE hypothesis, we chose a typical mountain with obvious elevation gradients and considerable plant coverage as a study area in the east of the Loess Plateau and partitioned various elevation belts across this mountain. Through measuring the species diversity of arbor, shrub and herb communities in forest ecosystems, we explored altitudinal patterns of species diversity of mountainous plants with different gradients. We determined that the family numbers of the herb and shrub communities, as well as the species diversity of the arbor community, reached their maximums at intermediate elevations. The family numbers of the herb and shrub communities presented unimodal patterns across altitudinal gradients, and the highest values occurred at intermediate elevations. The family number of the arbor community showed a monotonic decreasing pattern, and the importance values of dominant families in the shrub and arbor communities presented unimodal patterns, but the lowest values occurred at intermediate elevations. The species diversity of the herb, shrub and arbor communities conformed to unimodal change patterns following altitudinal gradients, but the greatest diversity occurred at high, low and intermediate elevations, respectively. At higher elevations, weeds and grasses grew well, whereas sedges grew well at lower elevations. With respect to the importance values of different arbor life forms, their responses to altitudinal gradients indicated a certain variation pattern, which was greater for evergreen coniferous arbor species than for deciduous coniferous arbor species and deciduous broad-leaved arbor species. It is concluded that the MDE hypothesis of species diversity for mountainous plants is influenced greatly by the community life form and family flora at the plant level in a temperate semi-arid region of the Loess Plateau, China. This conclusion tests and modifies the MDE hypothesis and can be valuable for fueling prediction of biodiversity models and for the comparison with similar studies in different regions.
