In this article, the authors describe relatively recent efforts by scientific research agencies to promote, through various funding programs, the integration of social sciences and humanities with the natural sciences. This “integrated” approach seeks to study science through a broader interdisciplinary lens in order to better anticipate, understand, and address its ethical, legal, and social implications. The authors review the origins and evolution of this trend, as well the arguments which have been formulated by both proponents and critics of integration. By using Genome Canada's “GE3LS” Research Program as a case study, the authors discuss the successes and continuing challenges of this model based on evaluation results available to date. The authors then go on to examine and compare three possible models for improving the future success of the GE3LS research program, including: 1) enhancing the current integrated research approach through incremental refinements based on concrete evidence and lessons learned; 2) promoting greater interaction and synergy across GE3LS research projects through a deliberate, systematic and coordinated “hub and spoke” approach; and 3) taking a broad programmatic approach to GE3LS research by creating a central resource of available expertise and advisory capacity.

Однолиста аналітична в ${\mathbb D}=\{z:\;|z|<1\}$ функція $f(z)$ називається опуклою, якщо $f({\mathbb D})$ $-$ опукла область. Добре відомо, що умова $\text{Re}\,\{1+zf''(z)/f'(z)\}>0$, $z\in{\mathbb D}$, є необхідною і достатньою для опуклості $f$. Функція $f$ називається близькою до опуклої в ${\mathbb D},$ якщо існує опукла в ${\mathbb D}$ функція $\Phi$ така, що $\text{Re}\,(f'(z)/\Phi'(z))>0$, $z\in{\mathbb D}$. С.М. Шах вказав умови на дійсні параметри $\beta_0,$ $\beta_1,$ $\gamma_0,$ $\gamma_1,$ $\gamma_2$ диференціального рівняння $z^2w''+(\beta_0 z^2+\beta_1 z)w'+(\gamma_0z^2+\gamma_1 z+\gamma_2) w=0, $ за яких існує цілий трансцендентний розв'язок $f$ такий, що $f$ і всі його похідні є близькими до опуклих в ${\mathbb D}$. Нехай $0<R\le+\infty$, ${\mathbb D}_R=\{z:\;|z|<R\}$ і $l$ $-$ додатна неперервна функція на $[0,R)$ така, що $ (R-r)l(r)>C,$ $C=\text{const}>1. $ Аналітична в ${\mathbb D}_R$ функція $f$ називається обмеженого $l$-індексу, якщо існує $N\in {\mathbb Z}_+$ таке, що \[\frac{|f^{(n)}(z)|}{n!l^n(|z|)}\le \max\bigg\{\frac{|f^{(k)}(z)|}{k!l^k(|z|)}:\;0\le k\le N\bigg\}\] для всіх $n\in {\mathbb Z}_+$ і $z\in {\mathbb D}_R.$ Досліджено близькість до опуклості та обмеженість $l$-індексу для аналітичних в ${\mathbb D}$ розв'язків трьох аналогічних Шаху диференціальних рівнянь: $z(z-1) w''+\beta z w'+\gamma w=0$, $(z-1)^2 w''+\beta z w'+\gamma w=0$ і $(1-z)^3 w''+\beta(1- z) w'+\gamma w=0$. Незважаючи на подібність цих рівнянь, їх розв'язки мають різні властивості.

ON MEROMORPHICALLY STARLIKE FUNCTIONS OF ORDER α AND TYPE β, WHICH SATISFY SHAH'S DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONAccording to M.L. Mogra, T.R. Reddy and O.P. Juneja an analytic inf n z n is said to be meromorphically starlike of order α ∈ [0, 1) and typeHere we investigate conditions on complex parameters β 0 , β 1 , γ 0 , γ 1 , γ 2 , under which the differential equation of S. Shah z 2 w ′′ + (β 0 z 2 + β 1 z)w ′ + (γ 0 z 2 + γ 1 z + γ 2 )w = 0 has meromorphically starlike solutions of order α ∈ [0, 1) and type β ∈ (0, 1]. Beside the main case n + γ 2 = 0, n ≥ 1, cases γ 2 = −1 and γ 2 = −2 are considered. Also the possibility of the existence of the solutions of the form f (z) = and investigate sufficient conditions on parameters β 0 , β 1 , γ 0 , γ 1 , γ 2 under which the differential equation of S. Shah has meromorphically convex solutions of order α ∈ [0, 1) and type β ∈ (0, 1].
