Immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis is a protein aggregation disease that leads to proteinaceous deposits in a variety of organs in the body and, if untreated, ultimately results in death. The mechanisms by which light-chain aggregation occurs are not well understood. Here we have used solution NMR spectroscopy and biophysical studies to probe immunoglobulin variable domain λV6-57 V L aggregation, a process that appears to drive the degenerative phenotypes in amyloidosis patients. Our results establish that aggregation proceeds via the unfolded state. We identify, through NMR relaxation experiments recorded on the unfolded domain ensemble, a series of hotspots that could be involved in the initial phases of aggregate formation. Mutational analysis of these hotspots reveals that the region that includes K16-R24 is particularly aggregation prone. Notably, this region includes the site of the R24G substitution, a mutation that is found in variable domains of λ light-chain deposits in 25% of patients. The R24G λV6-57 V L domain aggregates more rapidly than would be expected on the basis of thermodynamic stability alone, while substitutions in many of the aggregation-prone regions significantly slow down fibril formation.

The debate about environmental protection in relation to armed conflict began around 1970 due to the meeting of two political movements: on the one hand, becoming aware of the environmental problem including concern for future generations and, on the other, a need to develop the law of armed conflict, filling some loopholes left by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and reflecting experiences of conflicts which had happened since that time. There was (and is) a tension between the military interest of winning a war and the environmental interest of preserving the planet for future generations. Protocol I additional to the Geneva Convention adopted in 1977 constituted a victory for the military interest by defining the threshold of impermissible environmental damage in a way which is a far cry from satisfying the need of environmental preservation. But a lively discourse had started which has brought progress, but is far from yielding satisfactory final results. Major elements are the application of the rules concerning the protection of the civilian population and civilian objects to environmental protection, the principle of due regard for the environment, the recognized need to establish zones protected for the sake of environmental preservation, intensive activities of environmental fact-finding, the challenge of maintaining necessary environmental governance under the condition of armed conflict and environmental restoration as part of peacebuilding after the conflict.

Pricing Behavior for Sustainably Farmed Fish in International Trade: The Case of Norwegian Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

The purpose of this study is to examine how the competitive advantage on international markets based on sustainable production is reflected in the pricing behavior of farmed fish, using Norwegian Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as an example. The salmon is widely consumed and highly traded due to the rapid development of aquaculture. Norway, which has been successful in regulating and innovating for sustainable aquaculture, accounts for more than half of world production. A model dealing with pass-through of exchange rates and tariff rates based on the exporter’s profit maximization was applied to 28 major countries importing from Norway, using yearly panel data for 2000–2016. Significant evidence of price discrimination was observed in Asian countries where Norway has a high market share, such as China, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. This implies that the market structure of imperfect competition played a major role, suggesting the need to diversify imports to transform the market structure in favor of consumers in Asian countries. Research on the pricing behavior of fisheries products, including cultured fish, is limited in international trade. This paper addresses the gap by applying the pass-through model with changes in tariff rate as well as exchange rate.
