Abstract: Mediator-less microbial fuel cells (MFC) enriched with oligotrophic microbes were optimized through enhancement of cathode reaction and lowering O2 diffusion into the anode compartment as a low BOD sensor. The optimization of the MFC has greatly improved the maximum current and coulomb yield. The oligotroph-type MFC could be used as a low BOD sensor with high operational stability, good repeatability and reproducibility.

“…For example, oxygen is known to transfer from the cathode chamber to the anode chamber through a Nafion membrane, which reduces electricity generation at the anode, because the anode-respiring bacteria use oxygen preferentially over the anode as the electron acceptor (Kang et al, 2003;Pham et al, 2004). Thus, we evaluated the transport of oxygen and acetate through the AEMs.…”

“…So far, most sensors reported in the literature have made use of expensive platinum [19,20,21]. However, considering the high cost and low durability of platinum due to corrosion and degradation of catalytic activity over time [22], alternative metal catalysts such as indium/tin [23], cobalt [24], titanium [25], tungsten [26], or manganese [27] should be sought.…”

“…Other labs have elected to report current [26] or current density normalized to surface area [27][28][29][30] as a function of time, or as absolute power [15,16] or power normalized to electrode surface area [31] as a function of current. Power density as a function of current density (normalized to surface area) [32][33][34] or absolute current [35] has also been reported.…”
