Abstract: Rice genome research is a recent topic in plant genomics. Because of its importance as the primary staple food for about half of the world's population, breeders, geneticists and molecular biologists in plant fields have strong interest in the resultant research. In this Minireview, results of rice genome research during the past 10 years and future prospects are presented.

“…Whereas O. glaberrima is cultivated in restricted areas of western Africa, O. sativa is cultivated globally. Since the time of its initial domestication, Asian cultivated rice has been moved across the globe with migrating human populations (13); rice cultivation can now be found on all continents except Antarctica and feeds more than half of the world's population (12). Each year an estimated 408,661 million metric tons of rice is consumed, supplying 20% of the world's total caloric intake (14).…”

“…and includes early evidence for domesticated melon, cucumber, almond, mango, root crops such as taro, and rice (4). Of all of the crops domesticated in the east Asian center, cultivated Asian rice, Oryza sativa, represents the world's most important agricultural species, feeding more people since the time of its domestication than any other crop (12).…”

“…A more logical conclusion would therefore be that the rarity of Swatow wares at al-Mataf is to be explained by the fact that occupation was already at an end by the time they were introduced in the last half of the sixteenth century. This dating is supported by Sasaki who has studied and published a large amount of pottery from the site, most of which he places between the early fourteenth and the late sixteenth century (67). The earlier dating is also supported by the twenty-six coins that Lowick published from Julfar (68).…”

“…were built over those of phase 2, but they respected the same street plan and property boundaries. The excavators suggest that the population decreased slightly compared to the previous phase, although they do not say why -presumably because the amount of domestic space declined (33).…”

“…The idea that the actual f gas in clusters should be universal is the starting point of an interesting cosmological test that has been proposed based on the apparent evolution of f gas with redshift (Sasaki 1996;Pen, 1997;Cooray 1998). The principle of this test is based on the fact that the inferred gas mass fraction from X-ray data depends on the assumed cosmology through the angular distance.…”
