Abstract: BackgroundParathyroid gland and their tumors comprise a small proportion of non-palpable neck masses that are investigated by ultrasound (US) guided fine needle aspiration biopsy. We reviewed our institution's cases of US guided FNAB of parathyroid gland and their lesions to determine the role of cytology for the preoperative diagnosis of parathyroid gland and their lesions.MethodAll cases of FNAB of parathyroid gland and lesions in the last 10 years were reviewed in detail with respect to clinical history and… Show more

“…With the above issue in mind, to reevaluate the real impact of the main thyroid diseases and to redefine the diagnostic role of FNA-PTH in HP diagnostic evaluation, all data from pHPT patients with coexistent NG (33,34). The different diagnostic accuracy between these FNA techniques is explained by the minimal amount of material needed to assay PTH-FNA, which was not sufficient for cytology.…”

“…FNA cytology and histology were performed by an experienced pathologist (M L Lai), who was unaware of neck US and MIBI images. Cytological diagnosis of TNs and HP was expressed according to standard criteria (20,33). For the purpose of this study, FNA cytology was considered 'positive' when suggestive of HP and 'negative' in the absence of HP features or inadequate sample.…”

“…When submitted as a thyroid FNA specimen, parathyroid adenomas (PA) tend to be misinterpreted as a follicular neoplasm or suspicious for a follicular neoplasm according to category IV of the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology [7]. The cytological outcome may be considered indicative of a parathyroid nodule only when all of the cells of the microfollicular groups are significantly smaller than thyroid cells [9]. Sometimes parathyroid cells have a wider rim of clear cytoplasm or an oncocytic appearance (fig.…”
