The range of scope readings for Inuktitut nominal expressions appears superficially to depend on the verbal morpho-syntax, with noun incorporation and antipassive inflection both playing a role. A new model is presented in which the syntactic role played by agreement features in Case theory is unified with the absence of a choice functional D in the semantic interpretation. For both, a phase-level D-deletion operation ensures the correct results. The model is shown to account for the scopal properties of nominals in a range of contexts larger than the literature typically considers, including incorporation of predicational, locational, and locative nouns, and non-modalis-marked arguments of non-antipassive verbs.

Noun incorporation is commonly thought to avoid the weak compositionality of compounds because it involves conjunction of an argument noun with the incorporating verb. However, it is weakly compositional in two ways. First, the noun’s entity argument needs to be bound or saturated, but previous accounts fail to adequately ensure that it is. Second, non-arguments are often incorporated in many languages, and their thematic role is available for contextual selection.We show that these two weaknesses are actually linked. We focus on the Kiowa language, which generally bars objects from incorporation but allows non-arguments. We show that a mediating relation is required to semantically link the noun to the verb. Absent a relation, the noun’s entity argument is not saturated, and the entire expression is uninterpretable. The mediating relation for non-objects also assigns it a thematic role instead of a postposition. Speakers can choose this role freely, subject to independent constraints from the pragmatics, syntax, and semantics.Objects in Kiowa are in fact allowed to incorporate in certain environments, but we show that these all independently involve a mediating relation. The mediating relation for objects quantifies over the noun and links the noun+verb construction to the rest of the clause. The head that introduces this relation re-categorizes the verb in the syntactic derivation. Essentially, we demonstrate two distinct mechanisms for noun incorporation.Having derived the distribution of Kiowa, we apply the same relations to derive constraints on English complex verbs and synthetic compounds, which exhibit most of the same constraints as Kiowa noun incorporation. We also look at languages with routine object incorporation, and show how the transitivity of the verb depends on whether the "Equation missing" head introducing the external argument assigns case to the re-categorized verb.

Dieser Umstand hat die Autorin dazu veranlasst, darüber nachzudenken, ob nicht die Balintarbeit diesbezüglich einen Beitrag leisten könnte 4 . Die Erwartung ist, dass über diese Methode die psychosozialen Kompetenzen von Tiermedizinern professionalisiert werden könnten, eine Maßnahme, die sicherlich dem Tier, dem Tierbesitzer und allen voran dem Tierarzt zu Gute kommen würde.…”

ZusammenfassungAnders als bei den üblichen Arzt-Patient-Beziehungen in der Humanmedizin, trifft man in der tiermedizinischen Praxis immer auf eine Dreiergruppe, bestehend aus einem Tierarzt, einem Tierpatienten und seinem Besitzer. Ein besseres Verständnis dieser Triade und der Ontologie, die ihr zugrunde liegt, bietet sowohl veterinär- als auch humanmedizinischen Kollegen eine neue Perspektive auf ihre professionellen Beziehungen und auf das, was sie darin emotional belastet. Denn überall, wo Angehörige oder Vormunde eines Patienten – egal ob Mensch oder Tier – mitreden möchten, dürfen oder gar müssen, nehmen für den Arzt die Komplexität und die Gesamtbelastung seiner Beziehung zum Patienten unvermeidbar zu. Die tiermedizinische Triade öffnet zudem einen in der Balintarbeit bis dato unbetretenen Raum, nämlich den der artenübergreifenden Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Tier. Haustiere nehmen oft eine wichtige und unersetzbare Rolle im Leben ihrer Besitzer ein. Die Bearbeitung tiermedizinischer Falldarstellungen in Balintgruppen könnte ein erster Anstoß dafür sein, dass in Zukunft Tiere und Beziehungen zu Tieren innerhalb der Balintarbeit wie selbstverständlich thematisiert und wertgeschätzt werden.
