Abstract: Plants belonging to the genus Allium are widely cultivated and used all over the world as food and medicinal plants. Since ancient times, these plants, particularly garlic (Allium sativum L.) and onion (Allium cepa L.), have represented important components of typical recipes and traditional healing systems. Not the least of which, their use as food biopreservatives is well documented, due to the relevant antibacterial activity of their extracts and essential oils. In addition to garlic and onion, this review … Show more

“…Due to their effective action in the prevention of civilization diseases, the interest of researchers in these plants is constantly growing [11,12] and they are perceived to be an important component of the diet [13]. In the last 25 years, many studies have focused on the role of Alliaceae bulbs in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases [12][13][14][15]. The formation and development of atherosclerotic lesions is fostered by many risk factors, the most important of which are blood lipids, increased platelet aggregation activity, and oxidative stress [16].…”

“…In addition, the essential oils changes the fluidity of mitochondrial membrane, which results in the leakage of radicals, cytochrome c, and calcium, ultimately leading to the cell death by apoptosis [ 43 , 44 ]. Some compounds, such as Nigella sativa , can inhibit histone deacetylase enzymes and DNA synthesis, while some other, such as Myrtus communis , can increase the activity of caspase-3 and caspase-9 [ 45 , 46 ]. The apoptotic effect of praziquantel and dexamethasone on PSC have been proven using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay and caspase-3 enzymatic activity [ 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Wound healing: a number of clinical trials evidenced efficacy of topically applied onion extracts for skin scarring, as comprehensively reviewed (Sidgwick et al, 2015). Antibacterial: significant in vitro activity against a number of Gram-positive strains, as reviewed (Corzo- Martıńez et al, 2007;Sharifi-Rad et al, 2016). Antiasthmatic and antiinflammatory: limited evidence from in vitro models, as reviewed (Corzo- Martıńez et al, 2007).…”
