Baccaurea dulcis is an underutilized plant, primarily grown for its fruit, distributed and cultivated only in Sumatra, Borneo and western part of Java Island, and its population is under threat. On the other hand, very few studies have been carried out of this species. The objective of this study was to estimate population distribution and ecology of Baccaurea dulcis in West Java, characterize plant morphological characters and correlate plant habitat of B. dulcis and the plant and fruit. In West Java B. dulcis is only distributed in the sub district Taman Sari of Bogor and sub district Cijeruk of Sukabumi. Even though the species in West Java has a restricted distribution, its morphological characters is quite varied, including size and nature of tree; color and texture of the bark; size and shape of leaves and fruits; color of fruit peel and pulp; and the size, shape and color of seeds. The species grow well in the low land (250 m -610 m above sea level) of tropical region at neutral soil pH of regosol or latosol soil type and smooth rather coarse soil texture at land slope from 0 % until 45 %. Using 32 variables of trunk, leaf, fruit and seed, all samples could be clustered into 6 groups with the proportion correct 0.903 and with specific fruit characters in each group. There were some significant positive and negative correlations found between habitat and fruit characters and among tree and fruit variables.

The morphological variability of Prosopis africana in its natural range (which includes three climate zones: Guinean zone, Sudano-Guinean zone and Sudanese zone) of Benin was studied on the basis of forest inventory carried out in three different vegetation types (savannah, fallow and field). The data recorded in 139 plots of 1000 m 2 each related to the diameter at breast height (1.3 m over the ground level), the bole height, the height to the first branch, crown height, the crown diameter, number of branches on each individual tree. In these plots, 143 sheets were used to determine the length of leaf, the pinna length, leaflets' length, numbers of pinna, the number of leaflets, and the stalk diameter. In addition, 735 cloves were measured to determine the fruit pods' diameter, pod length, the total fruit weight and number of seeds per fruit, the seed length, the weight of a seed, and pulp weight. Analysis of variance components shows that the variability of Prosopis is generally greater among individuals than within vegetation types and climatic zones. Discriminant analysis showed that of the 19 morphometric characters seven (7) in the vegetation types and twelve (12) in climate zones revealed a statistically significant discriminating pattern r (prob. <0.0001). From ascending cluster of 481 P. africana trees measured, 10 morphogroups were depicted on the basis of 19 morphometric characteristics (R 2 = 52.6%).

In Benin, people have a rich ethnobotanical knowledge of plant species, reflecting the cultural and ecological diversity of their environment. Several studies were focused on the question of how valuable are plant species for local communities. However, there has been very little research interest in the orchid species in spite of the importance of orchids in the livelihood of the local people. This study examined the use and differences in knowledge of local people of orchids in the Sudanian zone of Benin. An ethnobotanical study was conducted amongst the four main socio-economic and ethnic groups from six villages around the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve in Benin. One hundred and sixty people participated in this study. Data were gathered using semi-structured individual interviews and analysed using quantitative ethnobotanical methods. 29 different types of use were recorded and can be grouped into four main use categories: medicinal, veterinary, spiritual and food. There were differences in orchid utilization among the ethnic groups, gender and age. The knowledge of orchid uses was significantly affected by the ethnic group and the age of the respondent. Unlike young educated generations, most adults and elders, especially women, had a more comprehensive knowledge of orchid uses. Calyptrochilum christianum, the most used orchid, was mentioned in more than 50% of the types of orchid use. The Gourmantché and Waama tribe had more knowledge on orchid use whereas the Berba tribe had less knowledge. Three orchid species (Habenaria cirrhata, Eulophia horsfallii and Nervilia bicarinata) were reported as food. Orchids had low use value ranging from 0.01 (Eulophia spp) to 0.2 (C. christianum). The controlled access to the biosphere reserve and rural exodus can explain the lack of indigenous knowledge transfer of orchid use and value from elders to the young generation.
