“…As a result of acetone’s high vapor pressure and common usage, high concentrations of this chemical have been detected in many indoor and outdoor air environments . Heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation using TiO 2 is becoming an attractive technology for the remediation of airborne acetone (and other organic) contaminants. Chemical and photochemical studies of acetone on model TiO 2 surfaces have provided useful fundamental insights into the gas phase photooxidation of acetone on TiO 2 , with the rutile TiO 2 (110) surface receiving much of this effort. Acetone binds strongly to the TiO 2 (110) surface at low coverages, but its binding energy decreases significantly with increasing coverage due to strong intermolecular repulsions.…”

“…We know [2,8] that photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol can occur by two mechanisms: through a step of formation of the gaseous intermediate acetaldehyde, which is desorbed as an intermediate product mainly from the sites of weak ethanol adsorption [7], or via decomposition of the adsorbed substrate with formation of gaseous and adsorbed formate and acetate structures. The first route occurs with physical adsorption of ethanol molecules on the surface of the titanium dioxide, while the second route occurs with dissociative adsorption of ethanol.…”

“…The decrease in the concentration of the starting materials and also the accumulation of their oxidation products were detected chromatographically [2]. In order to determine the intermediate photooxidation products adsorbed on the surface of the TiO 2 and TiO 2 /ZrO 2 powders, we recorded the IR spectra under diffuse reflection conditions on a Thermo Nicolet NEXUS FT-IR spectrometer in the 4000-1000 cm -1 region.…”
