Abstract: The effects of intermating on recombination and the development of linkage maps were assessed in maize. Progeny derived from a common population (B73 x Mo17) before and after five generations of intermating were genotyped at the same set of 190 RFLP loci. Intermating resulted in nearly a four-fold increase in the genetic map distance and increased the potential for improved genetic resolution in 91% of the intervals evaluated. This mapping population and related information should connect research involving de… Show more

“…Gel blot analysis was performed with three different families derived from crosses between B73 (Rxo1) and Mo17 (rxo1): 131 recombinant inbred lines (RILs), 150 (rxo1͞rxo1) individuals from an F 2 family, and 219 RILs from a family derived from multiple cycles of intercrossing. The latter family exhibits a Ͼ3-fold increase in recombination compared with F 2 individuals because of the cycles of intercrossing (29). Digestion with BglII generated five restriction fragments from B73 that could be distinguished from Mo17 fragments.…”

“…The Y1 gene and the outer low copy regions, PCO131338 and sbe1 were mapped on 279 individuals of the intermated B73 ϫ Mo17 population (10). The B73 inbred line contained a 346-bp Tourist element within the Y1 gene, whereas the Mo17 did not, enabling the indel to be typed using agarose gel electrophoresis.…”

“…The Y1 gene and the outer low copy regions, PCO131338 and sbe1, were genetically mapped on 279 individuals of the high-resolution intermated B73 ϫ Mo17 recombinant inbred population (10). The genetic distances in this population are expanded Ϸ4 fold (10,22).…”

“…This is in accordance with previous observations on Arabidopsis thaliana (Liu et al 1996) and LHRF is to our knowledge the only other maize IRIL population publicly available. This resource allowed us maize (Beavis et al 1992;Lee et al 2002). However, the length of the IBM2 framework map from the MMP (see to map 30% more cDNAs than could be achieved with IBM alone.…”
