Friedel-Craft alkylation of benzene with 1-dodecene, which is an important reaction of synthetic detergent, was studied using the catalyst of [bmim][TFSI]/AlCl3 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide/AlCl3). These ionic liquid catalysts show biphasic behaviors at specific condition. Active site species and Lewis acidity were determined by NMR and acetonitrile probe FT-IR. NMR spectroscopy investigations indicated that "Coordinated" and "uncoordinated"[TFSI]existed in the ionic liquid catalyst system sumultaneity, while tetrahedral 4-coordinate Al2Cl7was the main active specie for Friedel-Craft alkylation. The complexation [AlClx(TFSI)y]tend to decompose and release 4-coordinated Al2Cl7and [TFSI] -. The phase behaviors study of the ionic liquid [bmim][TFSI]/AlCl3 demonstrated that the upper phase could be used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst when AlCl3/IL≥1.5. Due to the presence of anion [TFSI]around active sites, especially [TFSI]at "uncoordinated" state, ionic liquid formed a stable and hydrophobic chemical environment, which enhanced catalysts durability. The influence of various reaction conditions including catalyst reusability on the alkylation reaction was studied, and the potential reasons to catalyst deactivation were discussed. The highest 2-LAB selectivity was more than 50% when 1-dodecene conversion was nearly 100%. Comparing with liquid or solid acid catalyst, ionic liquid catalysts have many advantages in perspectives concerning energy and environmental.

The paper analyses the role of catalysis and that of renewable resources in the frame of a sustainable development. The possible uses of natural feedstocks for chemical production and the application of catalytic<br />methods to their transformations are reviewed, with emphasis on carbohydrates and vegetable oils and on zeolite catalysts, respectively. The problems arising from the embedment of active sites on the catalyst<br />surface are discussed, with the aid of specific examples taken from oxidation and acid catalysed reactions.

Friedel-Crafts alkylations of a-methylnaphthalene with various alkylating agents were first carried out in the presence of methanesulfonic acid (MeSA). The Brønsted acid catalyst MeSA exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, and was found to be excellent catalyst and solvent for alkylation reaction of aromatic hydrocarbon. It's found that alkenes can be used as excellent alkylating agent for alkylation of a-methylnaphthalene. The effects of various reaction parameters like type of alkylating agent, dosages of catalysts, reaction temperature and reaction time were investigated in detail. Moreover, the performance of reuse for catalysts was also studied. It's found that, under the optimal reaction conditions, more than 90% of conversion for olefins and 100% of selectivity for the desired products were obtained. Compared with traditional catalysis technology, the reaction, catalyzed by MeSA catalyst, no volatile solvents needed, good selectivity for desired products could be obtained. The catalyst can be isolated easily from the reaction mixtures by decantation, and was successfully reused. The methanesulfonic acid could be considered as environmentally friendly novel catalyst and solvent for long-chain alkylation of a-methylnaphthalene with alkenes. The catalytic reaction mechanism for alkylation in the presence of MeSA was proposed as well.
