(9R)-9-Hydroxystearate-Functionalized Anticancer Ceramics Promote Loading of Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: Functionalization of calcium phosphates for biomedical applications has been proposed as a strategy to enrich the good osteoinductive properties of these materials with specific therapeutic characteristics. Herein, we prepared and characterized hydroxyapatite nanocrystals functionalized with an anticancer agent, (9R)-9-hydroxystearate (HSA), and loaded with an antimicrobial agent, namely silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Nanocrystals at two different contents of HSA, about 4 and 9 wt %, were prepared via direct sy… Show more

“…For adsorption of WO 3 nanoparticles, 500 mg of substrate (HA, HAPEI, HAPAA) were incubated with various volumes of WO 3 colloidal solution (5,20,40, 80 and 120 mL). The suspensions were maintained at room temperature under magnetic stirring for 1 h. At the end of the incubation time, the suspensions were filtered on a Buchner funnel, and the obtained solids were washed with the minimum amount of H 2 O and dried at 37 • C. The resulting samples were labeled HAX, HAPAAX and HAPEIX, where X indicates the volume (number of mL) of the colloidal solution.…”

“…Biocompatible HAp contains some monovalent (Na + ), divalent (Mg +2 ) cations and divalent anions (CO 3 −2 ), which is a nonstoichiometric calcium phosphate (Figure 1). Hydroxyapatite produced synthetically is a stoichiometric material with a Ca/P ratio of 1.67 and used as a bio-ceramic in different applications, such as bio-ceramic coating, bone tissue and dental applications due to its excellent physical, chemical and biological properties [10,11].…”
