The strength differential effect in different heat treatment conditions of the steels 42CrMoS4 and 100Cr6

The strength difference in bainite was somewhat smaller [2,7] while ferrite-pearlite conditions do not seem to exhibit a strength difference at all [2,11,12] or according to other references [8] only a very small one. The influence of the carbon content regarding the magnitude of the strength difference is not consistent in the literature.…”

“…Regarding [2,8,13], the influences of friction occurring in the compression tests between specimen and support do not seem to play an important role. In addition, it was found that the Lüders strain is smaller under compressive than under tensile loading [2].…”

“…So, these factors are not likely to be the origin of the SDeffect alone. It is rather assumed that in case of steels the tetragonal distortion of the lattice creates a non-linear stress field that enables higher bonding forces between the carbon atoms and dislocations under compressive loading than under tensile loading [3,8,9]. Hence, the different yield strengths seem to depend on the critical shear stress in the material that is influenced by the elastic strain fields.…”
