It has now been well recognized that both the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are closely related to the water accumulation and transport inside its porous components, particularly in the gas diffusion layer (GDL), and microporous layer (MPL). In this paper, the key GDL and MPL properties that affect water transport through them are first discussed and a review of GDL degradation mechanisms is presented. An intermittent water drainage mechanism across the GDL is discussed. The capillary breakthrough pressure (CBP) and the dynamic capillary pressure (DCP), or recurrent breakthrough dynamics, have been identified as key GDL properties that affect its water management performance and function as indicators of the degradation of GDL material. This work uses a novel ex situ experiment to degrade a GDL by exposing it to an accelerated stress test (AST) that subjects the GDL to elevated operation conditions seen at the cathode side of a PEMFC for an extended period of time. In turn, the effect of the AST on the CBP and DCP is investigated. As a result, a loss of hydrophobicity occurred on the MPL surface. This altered the CBP and DCP, thus decreasing water management in the GDL.

Optimisation of the Microporous Layer for a Polybenzimidazole‐Based High Temperature PEMFC – Effect of Carbon Content

This work aims at studying the role of the microporous layer (MPL) in electrodes prepared for high temperature PBI‐based PEMFC. The two main components of this layer are carbon black and a polymeric binder (Teflon). This work addresses the effect of the MPL carbon amount on the performance of a high temperature PEMFC. Thus, gas diffusion layers (GDLs) containing MPL with different carbon contents (from 0.5 to 4 mg cm–2) were prepared. Firstly, they were physically characterised by Hg‐porosimetry measuring pore size distribution, porosity, tortuosity and mean pore size. Permeability measurements were also performed. The higher the carbon content was the lower both porosity and permeability were. Afterwards, electrodes were prepared with these GDLs and were electrochemically characterised. Electrochemical surface area (ESA) was determined and fuel cell performance was evaluated under different fuel and comburent stoichiometries, supporting these results with impedance spectra. This made it possible to see the benefits of the MPL inclusion in the electrode structure, with a significant increase in the fuel cell performance and ESA. Once the goodness of the MPL was confirmed, result analysis led to an optimum MPL composition of 2 mg cm–2 of carbon for both electrodes, anode and cathode.

Influence of the Teflon loading in the gas diffusion layer of PBI-based PEM fuel cells

The influence of the PTFE content in commercial Toray graphite paper gas diffusion layer (GDL) on the performance of a PBI-based polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been studied. These materials have been characterised by evaluating the porosity, pore size distribution, SEM micrographs, hydrophobicity, air permeability and electrical resistance. Fuel cell results show that the lower the Teflon content, the better the cell performance and the lower the losses when oxygen was replaced by air. These results led to nonTeflonized carbon paper to be postulated as the most suitable candidate, provided that its mechanical integrity can be maintained throughout the whole process of preparation and testing of the MEA. However, some practical problems with this type of commercial non-Teflonized carbon paper were experienced in this work and led to damage of the support. The detrimental effects are described and discussed. As conclusion, the use of a minimally PTFE-loaded (10%) carbon paper is suggested because the inclusion of this level of Teflon improved properly the mechanical properties of the carbon support and only caused a very small drop in the performance.
