“…(In case of a polymer surface undergoing plasma modification, the role of the second radical in the second reaction as an H atom scavenger could also be played by plasma species.) Upon prolonged irradiation these imines may undergo secondary reactions providing unsaturated imines with longer carbon chains, diethylamine for example, furnishes CH 3 CHCHCHNCH 2 CH 3 as major product …”

“…Upon prolonged irradiation these imines may undergo secondary reactions providing unsaturated imines with longer carbon chains, diethylamine for example, furnishes CH 3 ─CHCH─CHN─CH 2 ─CH 3 as major product. [60] These examples may suffice 2 to justify the suspicion that the production of thin films or polymers with substantial concentrations of amine moeities by plasma-or UV-based processes is possibly much rarer than claimed in a large number of papers published in the recent four decades. Of course, however, it cannot be excluded that primary amino groups may be formed by hydrolysis of >CN─ groups upon exposure of a plasma-or UV-nitrogenated film, or surface to water or humid air.…”

“…Triethylamine (1a) was selected as the model substrate for the first series of experiments. 13 Amine 1a, used either neat or in anhydrous acetonitrile solution (0.3 M), was placed inside a quartz test tube, which was capped with a rubber septum, and was treated with CO 2 (20 psi) at 0 o C for 20 min with stirring. The concentration of CO 2 in acetonitrile was estimated to be 0.241 M from the solubility reported for CO 2 in propionitrile 14 at 1 bar and 25 o C (initial molar ratio 1a: CO 2 of 1.24:1).…”
