Abstract: Ultrasound guided transrectal biopsy of the prostate is a well-tolerated and effective method for obtaining multiple biopsy specimens from the prostate with low incidence of serious complications. Its is also accurate enough, allowing its use in everyday urology, as a diagnostic procedure.

“…In our study, 16 patients (4.56%) presented with urinary retention, a number significantly greater than those seen in comparable studies. Only in the study of Deliveliotis et al ( 27 ) occurred a similar rate (4.6%) of urinary retention. The cause of urinary retention can be explained perhaps by collecting fragments in transition zones near the prostatic urethra, prostate volume, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) pre biopsy or the number of cores collected.…”

“…As per the results of our analysis, the rate of rectal bleeding demonstrated a remarkable heterogeneity, ranging from 0% to 37.1% ( Table 1 ). 13 - 39 Notably, the clear stratification between mild, moderate, and severe bleeding in individual studies was not clearly delineated. However, most patients experienced minor bleeding episodes that were amenable to traditional conservative measures.…”

“…6 The situation has recently been amplified by findings such as those from the prostate cancer prevention trial (PCPT), 12 indicating that historical cutoff levels for prostate cancer screening using a PSA level of 4 ng/mL may no longer be appropriate, particularly among younger men. Lastly, the decision to biopsy needs to be weighed against the complication rates of TRUS-BX, [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] particularly with more recent understanding of the frequency of serious infectious complications requiring hospitalization.…”
