Introduction: Laser-assisted hair removal is widely used by a large number of patients complaining of unwanted hair. However, little is known about the effect of varying the pulse duration on clinical results and side effects. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of hair removal using an alexandrite laser with different pulse durations. Methods: Fifty female patients with facial hirsutism were subjected to a hair removal procedure with an alexandrite laser, using 3 and 10 milliseconds pulse durations on each side of the face every 5 weeks for three sessions. Photographs were taken and hair counts were checked before the treatment and one month postoperatively. Results: one month after the laser treatment, the clearance rate was 56% with both 3 and 10 milliseconds pulse durations. There was not any significant difference in clinical efficacy or the side effect profile. Conclusion: Using a 755 nm alexandrite laser for hair removal is an effective and safe method for delaying hair regrowth and this delay is not markedly different by increasing the pulse duration from 3 to 10 milliseconds.

Adverse Events of Light-Assisted Hair Removal: An Updated Review

Background With light-assisted hair removal becoming widely used, reports of adverse effects are increasing. Objective To review all the reported optical incidents and cutaneous complications of laser or intense pulse light-assisted hair removal. Methods A PubMed database systematic search was performed to identify studies reporting such adverse events before July 2022 using the Mesh terms “adverse effects” AND “hair removal” AND (“laser” OR “intense pulse light”). Results Altogether, 358 references were identified. After excluding duplicates, unrelated articles, guidelines, and conference abstracts, then adding references from studies bibliography, 104 publications were included. Ocular incidents consisted of anterior uveitis, iritis and iris atrophy, pupillary distortion, posterior synechiae, anterior chamber pigment, and cataracts in the anterior subcapsular region. Cutaneous complications consisted of pain, burns, folliculitis, leukotrichia, paradoxical hypertrichosis, pigmentary changes, changes in nevi, pili bigemini, herpes infection, hyperhidrosis, bromhidrosis, Fox-Fordyce disease, and frostbite from the cooling system. They were mostly correlated to skin type and body area as well as to light device and set parameters. Intense pulse light devices were found to be less painful than alexandrite laser, yet more painful than diode laser; Nd:YAG laser had the highest pain score. Conclusion Optical incidents can be systematically avoided. Cutaneous complications are usually related to professional errors and patient characteristics. Better knowledge of laser physics and adequate training of laser operators are key recommendations to avoid undesirable side effects. Safety recommendations help prevent most of the reported complications.

Background: Laser has become popular means of achieving hair reduction with improved quality of life. Meanwhile, different types of lasers show different clinical efficacy and safety according to the characteristic wavelength for each device and skin types of persons. Laser devices incorporating higher wavelengths have been developed to improve hair removal on dark skin, such as 1064 nm Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd: YAG) laser. They not only provide deeper light penetration for targeting deeply located follicles but also allow for higher fluences to be used since absorption by melanin decreases when wavelength is increased and therefore the skin is heated less. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser on hair reduction. Methods: This study was carried out on 20 adult women who seek axillary hair reduction. These subjects were adjusted to receive 5 laser sessions with a 1-month interval. Clinical evaluation was done at 1 month after last session with detection of side effects of laser. Results: As regards Fitzpatrick skin type, 8 subjects (40 %) were skin type III and 12 subjects (60 %) were skin type IV. The hair count showed significant reduction (P<0.001) with hair reduction percentage of 64.3%. Regarding the side effects, there was significant pain during the procedure and encountered in 60% of cases. Conclusion: 1064-nm long pulsed Nd:YAG laser is safe and effective in hair reduction.
