8.1: Invited Paper: TDEL: Technology Evolution in Inorganic Electroluminescence

Abstract: In 1991, iFire Technology Corp. invented a new solid state display technology based on a combination of thick film screen printing and thin film phosphors, called Thick Dielectric Electroluminescent, or TDEL. Since that time, the technology has been under continuous development to improve brightness, contrast, colour, image quality, lifetime, and manufacturability (cost). Now the company is in transition from R&D to commercialization, with the construction of a pilot manufacturing facility underway, and plans… Show more

“…Red EL devices, with phosphors such as Eu 2 O 3 [10], Ga 2 O 3 :Eu [11,12], and IGZO:Eu [13], were also developed using alternative device structures. However, only the use of a color filter with the yellow ZnS:Mn phosphor resulted in sufficiently high red luminescence to be used in commercial products [14]. This solution is unfortunately not suitable for transparent display applications as the use of filters reduces the overall transparency of the device.…”

“…Inorganic electroluminescence is used in full-color displays. 37) The polarization characteristics of a nanostripe electrode in an inorganic EL device prevent external light reflection and may improve the visibility of the display. Although an antireflective film composed of a polarizing plate and a quarter-wave (λ=4) plate is usually used with the electrode, we used only a nanostripe electrode to evaluate its performance.…”

“…Currently, it is the best choice that thin film of barium thioaluminate phosphors doped by europium which provides effective blue color and high brightness required by full-color inorganic electroluminescence displays. [1][2][3][4][5] Fig. 1 shows the typical structure of BaAl 2 S 4 :Eu TFEL device.…”
