72.1: Invited Paper: High Performance White OLEDs for Next Generation Solid State Lightings

Abstract: Two-unit fluorescent/phosphorescent OLED system with a light outcoupling substrate gives high efficacy of over 55 lm/W and quite long half decay lifetime of over 150,000 h at 1,000 cd/m 2 . White OLED lighting panels of 8 cm x 8 cm for high luminance operation were fabricated and quite stable emission at 3,000 cd/m 2 was confirmed. All phosphorescent white OLEDs on the light outcoupling substrate show higher efficacy of about 70 lm/W and with a fairly good half decay lifetime of over 30,000 h. With a further v… Show more

“…First way is improvement of internal quantum efficiency (IQE) by increasing radiative hole-electron recombination efficiency. Various results of quite high performance OLED were already reported with the use of, for instance, phosphorescent dyes [2,3,11]. Optimization of career balance with designing stacked organic layers such as electron transportation layer (ETL), emitting layer (EML), hole transportation layer (HTL), and some other injection or blocking layers are also required to maximize IQE.…”

“…With demonstrated 100% IQE, phosphorescent emitters allow up to 100% of excited states to emit radiatively [4], and thus enable high efficacy OLED light panels [5][6] and displays [7]. In addition, the very high IQE minimizes heat generated from nonemissive excited states, and also provides the additional benefit of lowering drive current for a given luminance, which reduces Joule heating in transporting charge throughout the light panel or display.…”
