Abstract.The first beam of post-accelerated radioactive ions was realized in 1989 at the Louvainla-Neuve research facility. The method employed two coupled cyclotrons to produce, separate and re-accelerate the species of interest. Several technological challenges were solved in the process, to obtain pure and intense beams for use in nuclear physics research. Similarly, new techniques were developed and refined for the measurement of the nuclear reactions induced by the radioactive beams. The available energy range made the facility particularly suited for nuclear astrophysics studies, and important results were obtained in the determination of stellar reaction rates using beams of 7 Be, 13 N, 18 F, 18,19 Ne. A beam of 6 He ions was extensively used in studies of the nuclear structure (halos, molecular states) and dynamics (the reaction process at energies around the potential barrier).

Abstract. The present status of fusion reactions involving light (A < 20) radioactive projectiles at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E < 10 MeV per nucleon) is reviewed, emphasizing measurements made within the last decade. Data on elastic scattering (providing total reaction cross section information) and breakup channels for the involved systems, demonstrating the relationship between these and the fusion channel, are also reviewed. Similarities and differences in the behavior of fusion and total reaction cross section data concerning halo nuclei, weakly-bound but less exotic projectiles, and strongly-bound systems are discussed. One difference in the behavior of fusion excitation functions near the Coulomb barrier seems to emerge between neutron-halo and proton-halo systems. The role of charge has been investigated by comparing the fusion excitation functions, properly scaled, for different neutron-and proton-rich systems. Possible physical explanations for the observed differences are also reviewed.

The unbound nucleus 7 He has been investigated via the reaction of a 16.8 MeV 6 He radioactive ion beam on a 9 Be target. The measurement of the outgoing 8 Be through its well characterized two-α decay permitted the energy of the 6 He +n system to be reconstructed. Through comparison with a complete Monte Carlo simulation incorporating R-matrix lineshapes, the 7 He ground state was determined to lie 0.380(28) MeV above the neutron decay with a width of = 0.179(21) MeV. A neutron spectroscopic factor SF = 0.608(18) was extracted in agreement with the most recent calculations. Significant evidence was found for a broad resonance lying at 2.6(2) MeV above threshold with a FWHM = 2.3(3) MeV. These parameters are fully consistent with the properties of 1/2 − state reported by Wuosmaa et al. [Phys. Rev. C 72, 061301(R) (2005)]. Limits were also put on the presence of narrow resonances seen in earlier experiments.
