6G Enabled Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Traffic Management: A Perspective

Abstract: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and UAV traffic management (UTM) have drawn attention for applications such as parcel delivery, aerial mapping, agriculture, and surveillance based on line-ofsight (LoS) links. UTM is essential to operate multiple fully autonomous UAVs safely beyond the visual line of sight (BVLoS) in the future dense UAV traffic environment. Various research and development teams globally take UTM initiatives and work on platform testing with different industrial partners. In the future, urban … Show more

“…The UAVs or aerial vehicles can be classified into different categories based on various characteristics and parameters such as flight capabilities, body length, rotor size, altitude, velocity, weight, air time, etc., according to [20]. Basically, the aerial vehicles can be categorized into micro aerial vehicles (MAV), small UAV (sUAV), UAV and personalized aerial vehicles (PAV).…”

“…Bekkouche et al (2019) proposed a framework for the management and orchestration of UAVs' services in a Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) Network Function Virtualization (NFV) environment by combining the functionalities provided by the management and orchestration framework with the functionalities of a UAV Traffic Management (UTM) system. Shrestha et al (2021) also presented their perspective on the use of 6G for UAV traffic management. Their work focuses mostly on the UAV operation and its requirements whilst in operation, lacking some technical insights into mobile network technology and the requirements at the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) level.…”
