69.1: Image Quality Assessment of Ultra‐High Resolution Mobile Display Utilizing New RGBW Method

Abstract: In this paper, newly‐developed 5.0‐inch full‐HD (1080 × RGBW × 1920) and 7.0‐inch WQXGA (2560 × RGBW × 1600) prototype LCDs utilizing a new RGBW method are described in detail. The assessment of the image quality of the new RGBW technology is described, such as color image reproducibility, white color tracking in the low power mode and tone curve correction in the outdoor bright mode.

“…We have developed a new RGBW method based on the "Extended HSV" color space model [2][3][4][5][6][7]. This method provides a simple way to determine the White output (W o ) and RGB data (R o , G o , B o ) and input data (R i , G i , B i ).…”

“…However, conventional RGBW technology has problems with image quality, such as color purity degradation caused by both the signal processing itself and the optical illusion called "Simultaneous Contrast" [1]. Recently, we have developed a new RGBW method to solve this problem utilizing an Extended HSV color space model [2][3][4][5][6][7]. We have also reported a new RGBW display that has good color reproducibility utilizing a color management system [6].…”

“…Color distortion is attributed to the reduction of the brightness of primary colors by 25% and the so-called "Simultaneous Contrast", while the loss of display details may be ascribed to the resolution reduction compared with RGB. [6][7] So it is important to employ the RGBW pixel format to significantly increase the power efficiency of the LCD displays without decreasing the chrominance of primary colors and display details. In fact, the image quality of the RGBW display depends strongly on effective RGB-to-RGBW mapping algorithms (RMA) consisting of RGB-to-RGBW conversion methods (RCM) and RGBW sub-pixel rendering methods (SPR).…”
