67‐1: Full‐Color Electrophoretic Displays with Improved Update Time

Abstract: Full color displays rendering any color and white at any pixel location have previously been demonstrated using E Ink's ACeP technology. The update time has now been improved to less than 1 second for color, and a high‐speed black and white mode has been developed. Even faster color modes are available for animation and pen writing. The improvements are made possible by improved electrophoretic compositions and novel TFT backplane architecture.

“…For a fair comparison with the Kaleido display for eReader applications, the ACeP display was driven with the waveforms for fast switching developed for eReader applications (<1 s update time), not those with long update times of >10 s developed for high-gamut signage applications. 3 In addition, gamut volumes are also calculated from a small set of measured colors, at a minimum the eight corner colors of the RGB cube. This minimal set of eight measured colors was interpolated to 602 colors, using a power law to estimate their intensities on the tone curve.…”

“…The quest for color eReaders has recently resulted in two commercialized electrophoretic technology platforms: E Ink Kaleido™ using a color filter array (CFA) on a black and white (B&W) backplane 1 and ACeP ® (Advanced Color ePaper) using a white and three color pigments. 2,3 In both color technologies, the light-reflecting layer of white pigment particles with Lambertian scatter characteristics gives the display a paper-like appearance and permits a wide range of viewing directions. Color requires spectrally selective modulation of reflected light, for example, by CFA or color pigments.…”
