Heavy metal pollution in soils and sediments is becoming a matter of wide concern, this study was carried out in Dawa County of the Liaohe River Delta, with the aim of exploring the impacts of land use levels on heavy metal contamination of soil and sediment. A total of 129 soil samples were collected in different land use intensities (LUI). Soil metals (Fe, Mn, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and soil salinity, pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 − -N), available phosphorus (AP) and grain sizes were analyzed. Correlation analysis indicated that SOC and grain size played important roles in affecting the heavy metal distribution. The factor analysis results indicated that heavy metal contamination was most probably caused by industrial and agricultural wastewater discharges, domestic sewage discharge and atmospheric deposition. Using ANOVA, it found that human activities significantly changed soil physic-chemical properties through soil erosion, leaching and fertilizer application, further affecting the behaviors of heavy metals in the soil and sediments. The anthropogenic factors could lead to potential environmental risk, as indicated by the Geo-accumulation index (I geo ) results of heavy metals. Overall, the heavy metals generally had approached or even exceeded moderately polluted (0 < I geo < 1, 1 < I geo < 2), but the Pb and Cu pollution level was low (I geo < 0), and the Cd pollution level was moderately or strongly polluted (2 < I geo < 3, 3 < I geo < 4) in the five land use levels. This study will provide valuable information for appropriately determining how land should be used in future reclamation areas, as well as for the sustainable management of estuarine areas around the world.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of overland traffic on the spatial distribution of heavy metals in urban soils (Istanbul, Turkey). Road dust, surface, and subsurface soil samples were collected from a total of 41 locations along highways with dense traffic and secondary roads with lower traffic and analyzed for lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) concentrations. Statistical evaluation of the heavy metal concentrations observed along highways and along the secondary roads showed that the data were bimodally distributed. The maximum observed Pb, Zn, and Cu concentrations were 1,573, 522 and 136 mg/kg, respectively, in surface soils along highways and 99.3, 156, and 38.1 mg/kg along secondary roads. Correlation analysis of the metal concentrations in road dust, surface and 20-cm depth soils suggests the presence of a common pollution source. However, metal concentrations in the deeper soils were substantially lower than those observed at the surface, indicating low mobility of heavy metals, especially for Pb and Zn. A modified kriging approach that honors the bimodality of the data was used to estimate the spatial distribution of the surface concentrations of metals, and to identify hotspots. Results indicate that despite the presence of some industrial zones within the study area, traffic is the main heavy metal pollution source.

Este trabalho descreve um procedimento analítico para a determinação de íons chumbo (II) por voltametria de redissolução anódica de onda quadrada em amostra de gasolina pré-tratada e a avaliação de um eletrodo de pasta de carbono modificada com um material híbrido inorgânico-orgânico (aminopropil preso a uma rede de sílica (APSil) obtido via a rota sintética sol-gel) como um sensor eletroquímico. As condições ótimas de análise dos íons Pb 2+ foram as seguintes: a composição de APSil na pasta de carbono foi 40% (em massa); o pH da solução de deposição igual a 1,8; o potencial de acumulação igual -0,7 V vs. Ag/AgCl e o tempo de deposição de 600 s.
